Completed in November 2004 within a period of two years, the result of a multi-discipline design process, the Justizzentrum Leoben, Leoben Centre of Justice is one of the many projects of the Grazer architect Josef Hohensinn of Hohensinn Architektur. With a sense of avoiding the psychological damage inmates are suffering from with the detention, the building was designed in an almost transparent manner. With the usage of GLASS in the construction, a modern, open and light flooded environment was created to ensure the separation as well as "non-separation"” to the society for the inmates.

the rooms look as good as any hostels/homestays i've been to on my travels overseas!

i've seen news clippings of people breaking back into the prison after being released!
looks economically sustainable, they can rely on sunlight to brighten the place up, and I bet real estate prices in that area haven't dropped because of some cinderlock eyesore.

I am researching this prison for a piece in my own blog. I think that this is a refreshing and humane approach to corrections. I saw smiling faces in this prison as opposed to angry hateful images that are seen in US prisons. While many may feel that criminals should live in the worst of circumstances, these men and women are released into society full of rage, and feeling dehumanized. When a person is in this state it is easy for them to re offend as they view other people the way they view themselves.
